DarkAngel's #771 03.5 MSP is going forged......(Build/Log)
Well after finally coming to a decision, I am going forged. I could not have done it without the donor block Chris gave me. Thanks Chris. Instead of buying a original motor that would eventually go zoom zoom boom, I rather spend the extra bit of money and go forged.
SO far my tally is estimated at $2200 with all the work and parts. So far done: -- Had block bored and honed to .30 over -- Crank was sent off to California to get redone to .10/.10 and nitrided -- Brand new OEM Mazda Pump sent off to Doc B in NY to get coated and buying an adjustable PRV. ( will need an Oil Relocation kit though ). -- Have a complete engine kit lined up including K1 Rods and Wiseco Pistons ( Ken at PG ) -- Will be taking the head off the MSP and having it refreshed and decked for a flat smooth finish. -- Bought the UNICHIP for a very good price and will have it tuned later on after she is running. With the extra cylinder heads Chris gave me, I will pick the best one to send off to get redone when I get the cash. Also have an extra Intake that I will port to match the head. So many things to do and so little time. For now she is staying stock boost until I break her in properly. Then if I have the chance and money will take her to get tuned and get the most out of her, for now. She will be my daily so I have to take it easy on her. Really excited to finish her and finally drive her. ![]()

Many thanks Chris. I found out one of the main causes of failure for the motor though. The oil pump drive gear is stripped and broken, literally broke in three pieces. The gear is stripped where the crank drives it. Had to get a new pump. But other than that it did require a rebuild because of the oil starvation. All good though, its coming along.

Thanks, will update as soon as I can. Showing the Rods/Pistons shipped already and are in transit. Getting all excited now LOL. And my DocB pump with PRV is almost done as well.

From the seller in the Ebay add you posted about the .040 over Wiseco pistons. The ebay add stated call or email for a rod/piston combo so I did. I called up that shop in Texas and guy had one set of K1 rods left. He ordered me the pistons from Wiseco and they arrived Thursday to his business. Everything was then shipped out the same day. I had inquired if there was a back order until September on Wiseco or K1 and he had no clue that there was. He also told me all he needed was the money and he just needed to place the order with Wiseco. Sucks because I could have gotten them earlier but some wholesaler went to thier shop and bought all the sets he had for the Protege, as what he told me. Well anyways, finally going to finish this puppy up!

Yes Sir! I am hoping to finish it off before Mt Lemon so I can break her in. DocB Pump is the only thing now holding me back from finishing it. Sent Tom a message to check status on it.

As requested from AutoGod, pictures of everything.... well except the Water Pump but its a Brand New Bosch Pump thats not pictured. Have it all in the trunk ready for install. Just need to go get the braided lines with the oil filter relocation kit. Some odds and ends like sensors and fluids and I am all set. Got ARP Main and Head Studs( Main Studs already installed), MLS Cometic Head Gasket with Cometic Full Gasket Set, rebuilt Crank to .010/.010, K1 Standard Length Rods, Wiseco .040 Forged Pistons and DaveB Pump Mod and External PRV.
I just noticed the Bearings are missing from my set...... Hmmm well I wasn't charged for them at least. Gonna call them up tomorrow and see why they were not included or ordered. ![]()
